Eco packaging – no more plastic!
We hate plastic as much as you do! and so we’ve worked hard to come up with solutions to replace all the plastic in our packaging. Both our product bags and our mailing bags are now compostible. All orders leaving from our warehouse, now leave in ‘dirt bags’. However there is still some stock in the warehouse in regular polybags and so we will sell through these over the coming months. But all new stock going to the warehouse is now arriving in eco bags. Please do bear with us during this change over time.
‘Dirt bags’ for mailing
The mailing bags are from a company www.betterpackaging.com. They are 100% biodegradable and compostable matertials – including corn starch, PLA from corn. Polylactide (PLA) is a biodegradable material made from renewable plant material including corn husks, rice straw and wheat straw. They are renewable supplies, renewed annually and also use 65% less energy than producing conventional plastics. They are certified AS5810-2010 for home composting which means that they will be completely degraded by microorganisms in the natural world.
If you’d like to know more please do go to the company website where there is a huge amount of information. We really believe these mailing bags are a big step forward.
Our new product bags are from a company in Bangladesh called www.ecospearbd.com. These are made entirely from start and oil derived from vegetables. Even the colours used in the printing are non-toxic. They are 100% organic and will biodegrade naturally.
As a Fair Trade organisation we are always looking to create the least harm possible to the environment and to tread very lightly on this wonderful planet of ours. It has long been a cause for concern to us that we were using plastic bags but we have made this move to zero plastic as soon as was practicably possible. It’s so great that there are now companies around the world making eco packaging and we are delighted to be part of that movement.
